Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and essential way to boost the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can provide extra damage, AD or even affixes.

In most cases, however upgraded Common and Magic gear is beaten out by Rare-grade gear because of their high requirements.

Armor

Armor upgrades are a kind of upgrade that can be used on weapons and armor items. They increase the performance of the item they are attached to. Armor upgrades are available in the world of the game and are available from Blacksmiths on bonfires. They can also be salvaged using a specialist or higher salvage kits to recover upgrade components from items.

The amount of damage that an armored piece or weapon is able to absorb is dependent on the extent of its upgrades. The upgrade of an armor piece to the highest upgrade level will increase the damage it absorbs. However, it's important to keep in mind that this will increase its weight, which will cause it to weigh more than before.

There are a few different kinds of armor upgrades that are available in the game and they all have different effects. Certain upgrades grant armor an extra amount of health points while others make it more powerful and lighter. The kind of armor upgrade an item level upgrade can receive will be identified by the name of the upgrade, as indicated in the table below.

Some upgrades are magic or a hybrid of technology and magic, which is identified by a "Magic" or "Hybrid" entry in the table below. Some upgrades also require a charge to use, which are shown by the "Charges" entry in the table below. The charges for these upgrades change daily or never expire, dependent on the upgrade items.

Iron Ore is the cheapest way to upgrade your armor. It can be found by exploring and looting small chests. Titanium is more expensive, but is readily available in the smelters of Orgrimmar and Stormwind City. Some upgrades, such as the Reforge and the Hot Potato Books, can only be applied to high-level armor pieces. These upgrades can give players a significant boost in stats, and are worth the cost.

The player must be aware that upgrading a piece up to the maximum upgrade level will increase its defense values. However, it will also reduce the speed and agility of the piece. It is not recommended to upgrade armor past +9. The defensive boost gained typically isn't worth the weight and power expenses of the upgrades.

Weapons

Weapon upgrades allow players to increase the effectiveness of specific aspects of the weapon. Upgrades can increase the accuracy of a rifle or the damage caused by shotgun shells. Some weapons have special upgrades that enhance their inherent characteristics. These include Frictionless Materials (improves stability and minimizes the risk of overheating) and Kinetic Coils (increases projectile acceleration for more damage).

The majority of upgrades for weapons require a whetblade. It's one of three Power Dices and a different amount of Minerals and Erons. These are obtained through either completing Side Quests, killing a certain amount of bosses or monsters, or through the Weapon Upgrade NPC in Central Flarine.

To upgrade the weapon, equipment set piece or Whetblade You must go to the NPC [Armor] Boboko located in Central Flarine, and pay her an upgrade fee of a specific amount of Bars. The more bars required to complete an upgrade the more expensive the upgrade. If you have multiple upgrade items materials the cost of upgrading will be lower.

In Chapter 2: Season 5 the way you upgrade your weapon and equipment sets has changed. Prior to Chapter 2: Season 5 you could upgrade your weapon or equipment by paying a specific amount of Bars. You could do this until the weapon or equipment reached its maximum upgrade level, at which point the upgrades would reset.

This is still possible, but it depends heavily on RNG. You're better off buying gear with minimal upgrade levels and high base scores and stat distributions. These will be able to give you the highest tier bonuses and blessings.

Most players will want to make the most of upgrades to weapons they use most frequently to allow them to progress quicker. In addition players, they should think about upgrading the weapons that are most popular with their teammates to make them more powerful and effective. For instance, Shepard should consider upgrading the M92F to unlock the Beretta M93R to make it more useful when paired with experts in biotics like Grunt and Tali.

Jewels

Jewels can be used to boost a stat or provide secondary effects on weapons and armor. Jewelry crafting is the process of creating them. You combine the gemstone with specific reagents on a jewelry table. The higher the grade of the gemstone has, the more powerful its secondary effect. These reagents can be obtained around the world through Treasure Goblins, World Bosses and sometimes by salvaging Legendary equipment. You can also purchase them from The Jeweler in exchange for Scattered Prisms and gold.

The Jeweler can boost the quality of a gem in stages ranging from Crude up to Royal. Depending on the tier of the gem it will give different stat boost when slotted into gear, weapons and jewelry.

The Jeweler can craft all tiers of gems, apart from the rare and legendary ones which you must be at certain levels to gain. Jewels can be replaced with another jewel without damaging the original. However it is only possible to replace one jewel in an item of equipment once.

It is common to use more jewels for aesthetic reasons. The jewels can also enhance performance and create a harder surface than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to the movement.

In addition to the above-mentioned upgrades, the player can also get glyphs for their weapons and shields from a Glyphmaster. These are a small perk and are able to be swapped easily, but are not guaranteed to drop as loot. Glyphs are like jewelry and can be upgraded by the Jeweler to exchange gold and Scattered Crystals. Glyphs may also be removed and returned to the inventory. Other upgrade components, like traits and aegis, cannot be swapped out, and are only recoverable by using an Upgrade Extractor, or by salvaging them using a Black Lion Salvage Kit or an Ascended Salvage Tool.

Trinkets

Trinkets can be used to give your character various small, but valuable advantages. They can be obtained in the areas of starting as loot, personal story rewards, from vendors, or by doing road interactions. They can also be made by jewelers and later found or purchased at the Trading Post.

The first trinket that a player will unlock is the cloak. It gives a small but valuable boost in speed of movement and the ability to escape. Then, they can purchase amulets, rings and necklaces in the same fashion to how the player obtains armor and weapons. Each piece of gear comes with one upgrade slot that accepts either a universal upgrade or a jewel upgrade. Universal upgrades provide smaller bonuses and can be used in any type of equipment while jewelry cannot be replaced or upgraded and only works with specific types of trinkets.

These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't in combat. This allows the hero to become more efficient even when not in combat. It also helps compensate for the lack of a strong team or talent tree slots that are normally filled by the hero's optimal stats.

A good guideline for trinket upgrades is to prioritize BiS (Best item upgrader-in-Slot) items that you will not replace soon, followed by any items with desirable stats but less important than the iLevel of the item being upgraded. This is especially true when you are looking to upgrade multiple statistics on an item. It's more beneficial to upgrade a single important stat rather than two suboptimal ones.

Jungle players often upgrade their yellow trinket to a red one prior to the beginning of the game. Mid and top players, on the other hand, will choose either a pink or green ward, based on the matchup. These choices will have a major impact on the hero's abilities to control maps.

Apart from the items listed above, players may also discover a variety of other items in the form of trophies and awards. These can be obtained through completing certain milestones in the story, such as the main quest of a chapter or killing a particular boss.
