WoW Upgrades - The Item Upgrader

Upgrades provide a guaranteed boost to certain stats. Each upgrade boosts the level of an item by 3. Each upgrade also increases an unspecified substat.

The upgraded gear typically has a higher trade value regardless of whether it has low requirements (like the FB sorc's shield) or very high stat variation (like the eth titan weapons). These types of gear get less value from upgrading due to the necessity to roll for a perfect model.

Recycle Points

The item upgrader allows players to upgrade their gear by offering the currency to an NPC. Upgrades can be applied to any type of weapon or armor. The item used to upgrade the item will be consumed and can't be used again. Upgrades can also be applied to the enchantments.

You can upgrade your gear anytime by visiting the upgrader in any major city. To keep your gear up-to-date it is recommended that you visit the upgrader each several weeks.

Upgrades can cost more based on the item level, however, they are always less expensive than purchasing new gear. For example, upgrading a Benthic chest piece to 385 ilvl will cost 20 recycle points, while purchasing the same item level upgrade from a different player will cost 105.

Valorstones

Upgrades are items that can be used for weapon, armor, tool and accessory upgrades. They are purchased by players from NPCs that sell upgrades to items in exchange for various currencies, and can be found in random treasure lists. Once purchased, an upgrade can be used on any tool, weapon or armor. The button will show the preview of an item's next level of upgrade item, when there are enough materials.

The cost of upgrades varies based on the slot of the item and the current item level and the weapon's price is higher than gloves or bracers, for example. Each upgrade costs 15 Flightstones plus a specific number of crests. Some upgrades give discounts on Flightstones. After an item level Upgrade has been upgraded to a certain degree, it can be downgraded and sold to the upgrader at a lower cost.

Many locations offer item upgraders in addition to the main island and a few outposts. The NPCs offer both an upgrade coupon and the possibility of obtaining the latest recipe. The discount on upgrades increases depending on the amount of items that are being upgraded. It can also be increased by having players complete some specific achievements or quests.

Icewind Dale does not have an item upgrader at start unlike Cromwell from Baldur's Gate II. The NPCs who are able to facilitate upgrades are only available through a variety means. This is both a positive and an issue.

In Season 3, several new features were added to the upgrade system. Once a player obtains an upgrade to a certain level of an item for a specific armor slot, upgrading other items to that level will cost less, even in the event that they are part of another set of gear.

The amount of Valorstones needed for upgrades is reduced, and the discount is available across all accounts. The amount of Harbinger Crests required to upgrade is reduced also, but is only available once certain milestones are achieved.

Crests

These crests can be exchanged with an upgrader such as Cuzolth or Vaskarn, in Valdrakken for the appropriate upgrade steps and routes.

The new currency system isn't too difficult to use, but it brings some modifications to the upgrade process. For instance, once a piece of equipment reaches the highest level of upgrading for any rank (Explorer, Adventurer, Veteran, Champion, Hero, or Mythic) it won't require Flightstones to be upgraded. This change lets players upgrade item their gear to the highest possible ilvl on all of their characters instead of relying on seasonal loot.

Another notable modification is that crests have one purpose therefore it's essential to use them wisely. For instance it's a good idea utilize all of your Whelpling rank crests with the best gear you have available and save Drake and Wyrm crests to use for the next set of upgrades you plan to make.
