Item upgrades provide players with the possibility of upgrading equipment that they already have. This can be accomplished by any upgrader of items NPC.

Armour

Each fountain has a unique degree of upgrades available, with more granting greater levels of protection, but requiring a higher cost in rupees and other materials to unlock.

First, Armor Upgrades are permanent upgrades. Once they've been applied they aren't able to be removed until you own a different piece of equipment that has the same upgrade.
