Register of Exercise Professionals (REPS) is a UK-based program for fitness instructors and personal trainers. It recognizes qualifications based on industry, provides public liability insurance, and requires members to work within an industry code of practice.

It was disbanded in the year 2020 and its members migrated to CIMSPA. What does that mean for fitness professionals?

How do I become an REP?

What is CIMSPA?

CIMSPA the professional body in the UK for health and fitness professionals is an industry-recognized body that regulates trainers. Its mission is safeguarding the public's interest in employing fitness experts by ensuring that they have all the necessary abilities and technical expertise in addition to training and insurance. It is also responsible to maintain and develop professional standards for the fitness industry.

The organisation combines input from various stakeholders such as employers deployers, NGBs, awarding organizations, higher education institutions, training providers and practitioners to help shape the sector and support its professionals and their workforce. This is achieved by working in collaboration with the sector to understand and identify the requirements of the profession as well as the barriers that hinder its ability to deliver.

As part of this mission, CIMSPA provides the framework for an assurance system of quality for fitness professionals in the form of an endorsement process. This process identifies the content and quality of formal qualifications and training courses. CIMSPA generally endorses controlled (Ofqual) qualifications that are certificated by an accredited awarding body such as Focus Awards, Active IQ or YMCA Awards as well as certain kinds of specialist continuing professional development training (CPD).

CIMSPA membership also confers a certain level of recognition in the industry. Members have access to insurance that is specifically designed for them, such as public liability coverage up to PS10m and personal accident coverage. It also provides an evidence of professional development, which allows members to take no-cost e-learning courses and gives access to an online career portal that is updated regularly with job openings.

The body is also an affiliate of the International Confederation of Registers for Exercise Professionals (ICREPs), which means that its members can use their registration to work in other countries provided they are qualified to do so. The body is working to ensure that a consistent standard is established across the world in order to help the industry grow and maintain its reputation.

The CIMSPA Academy is a non-profit organization and works with partners to offer support, education, and guidance. In addition to this, the CIMSPA Academy offers free e-learning courses for its members, and includes a range of professional development topics relevant to the industry.

Are REPs qualifications recognized internationally?

The Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs) was an independent public register that was operated by an membership scheme. It was designed to protect the public, in addition to giving fitness professionals and employers confidence that they were working with an individual who was certified and had qualifications which aligned with National Occupational Standards.

REPs is a UK-based register, and as such only covers the UK fitness industry. It was not a requirement to be registered with REPs, however it gave clients the confidence that their fitness trainer was certified and operated to the highest standards.

In 2020, Reps Jobs REPs will be sold to UK Coaching. An agreement with CIMSPA has been reached to combine the REPs Directory with the CIMSPA directory. Fitness professionals are still able to join both REPs AND CIMSPA. However renewal of REPs membership is no longer be an option.

ICREPs which connects fitness professionals from around the world to international registers, has a global presence. This means that if you're REPs certified in the UK you are able to become a rep a personal trainer in other ICREPs countries such as Australia, Ireland, Poland, South Africa and UAE.

However, it is important to note that REPs does not provide a guarantee of employment or insurance coverage for Avon Rep fitness professionals. REPs, which is an association for industry and not a governing authority, is voluntary. Top international certification bodies like ACSM, NSCA, ISSA, NASM, and ACE are not affiliated with REPs, and therefore never offer job or insurance coverage to their fitness professionals.

Having said that, REPs is committed to keeping their members up-to-date with the ever-changing trends within the fitness industry. This is the reason REPs has an REPs points system that requires members to earn a an amount of REPs points each year to keep their REPs status. These avon reps are determined by the level of qualifications the member has and the number of CPD courses they have attended.
